I’ve been in Boise for a few weeks now, hanging out with Mom. I have had a chance to meet her hospice
nurse, Wanda Jo, and her social worker Jennifer. We were also able to spend time with Bonnie
Vestel, her friend and medical counselor.
I am amazed by people like these three women. They fill the room with genuine care and
kindness. We feel lucky to have them.
We learned a little about the stage Mom’s disease is in but
we learned a lot about how Mom is managing it.
All of them reiterated that she is atypical and that her core is
incredibly strong. I see this every day I am with her. No matter how sick she feels she finds a way
to accomplish something in her day and she makes sure to take care of herself. She
is eating well and making sure she takes her medicine regularly and exactly
when she should. She now has her massage
therapist come in three times per week to work through the lymphedema that is in
her stomach and both legs. She still
enjoys the occasional visit with friends and family and even has a couple
projects we’re working on together.
She is atypical, indeed.

She is a unique, precious woman. All of us and all the world are better for her being in it.
